A bungalow with a memory

Bungalow No. 6 is a heritage home in Indore, restored with the calm of an old verandah still intact. Temple bells at dusk, aparajita on the walls, family stories in the woodwork — we have kept what was already beautiful, and quietly added what was needed. Inspired by the Barasingha, the state animal of Madhya Pradesh, we stand for what is rare, what is preserved, and what is carried forward with quiet strength.

Built in 1932 for a colonial administrator, our bungalow spent nine quiet decades on this leafy lane. When we found it in 2023, the roof was sagging and the garden had grown into a jungle — but the arched verandah, the Athangudi tiles and the tall teak doors were exactly as the original owner had left them.

We rebuilt what needed rebuilding and left the rest alone. The old fireplace still works. The verandah still creaks in the same places. The neem tree in the back is now over a hundred years old.

Everything else — the kitchen, the coffee counter, the reading room, the bar in the old butler's pantry — was designed to feel as if it had always been there.
